What is Hike for Mike?
Enthusiastic hikers (individuals or teams) will converge on Acadia National Park October 1-9, 2011 to participate in Hike for Mike, which is destined to become the regions premier hiking event. This fun annual fundraiser for the Acadia Family Center celebrates the strength and resiliency of the human spirit and the power of community to create a healthy future. Hikers from across the region register to hike and then hit the trails and carriage roads of Acadia to compete for fabulous prizes. Hikers are encouraged to solicit donations from family, friends, co-workers and businesses to raise money for the substance use prevention and addiction treatment programs of Acadia Family Center. In addition to hiking, participate in the many Hike week activities offered by our community partners. We end Hike for Mike with a grand Summit Celebration party.

How do I register?
You may pre-register online OR you may print a registration form and send the completed form with a check made payable to Acadia Family Center and mail to Hike For Mike, PO Box 807, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679. Enjoy great food, live music, and prizes! Talk with other hikers about your experiences on the trails and celebrate your accomplishments! This is our opportunity to say thank you for working so hard to support the health and wellness of our island community. Don’t forget to bring along your Hiker Log Book and all the donations you’ve collected to be eligible for prizes.

Can I hike on Summit Celebration Day?
Absolutely! You can hike up until the Summit Celebration begins. You can even hike to the celebration!

What is the Hiker Log Book, and is it necessary to keep track of my hikes?
The hiker log book is a printable form that may be found in the “For Hikers” and "Register" sections of the website. Write the names of the trails and the miles you have hiked or walked. In order to be eligible for certain awards and prizes you MUST bring the log book with you to the Summit Celebration, or drop it off at the Family Center on Saturday, October 8 from 5-7pm. We will return your Hiker Log Book at the end of the Summit Celebration as a keepsake of your accomplishments during Hike Week.

Do the miles I earn attending Hike Week activities count towards the prizes?
Yes. For each activity you attend you can earn an extra mile in your hiker log book.

How do I get my Hike for Mike t-shirt?
The first 200 hikers who register receive a Hike for Mike t-shirt and goodie bags. You may pick up your gear at the Ready, Set, Hike! kick-off event on Saturday, October 1, at the Acadia Family Center, 1 Fernald Point Road, Southwest Harbor. Those not attending the kick-off may pick it up at the Summit Celebration or call 207 244-0720 to make other arrangements.

Is it a guided hike?
No. Hike for Mike participants hike on their own. Hikers are encouraged to select trails based on their own ability. However, we do offer many guided and group hikes during Hike Week, including three at the Ready, Set, Hike! kick-off event, and several as part of the Hike Week activities.

Where should I hike?
You may hike or walk any trail or carriage road in Acadia National Park October 1-9. There are about 125 miles of hiking trails and 45 miles of carriage roads. The trails range from short, level walks to steep strenuous climbs, and the carriage roads are a network of woodland roads free of motor vehicles. There are many hiking guides and online resources to help you plan your hikes to suit your interests and ability level. Need ideas? See our Hike Picks.

Can children participate?
Yes! With so many trails and carriage roads in Acadia National Park, there are walks and hikes for every age and ability level. Every child is different, and parents are encouraged to educate themselves about the hike they choose for their child.

Can I bring my dog?
Pets are allowed within Acadia National Park with certain restrictions. Go to www.acadiamagic.com/pets-in-park.html for more information.

Do I have to collect donations or pledges?
No. While we encourage hikers to raise money for the many programs and services offered by the Acadia Family Center, you do not have to fundraise to participate in the hike-a-thon. However, hikers who make a commitment to raise $50 receive free entry to the Summit Celebration and are eligible for the grand prize. If you do not fundraise, you are still eligible for other fabulous prizes.

I am part of a team/family. Do each of us have to make a commitment to raise $50 in order to get free admission to the Summit Celebration?
Yes. The party is free for each hiker who makes a commitment to raise $50 and for children under 10.

Will I get a paper ticket for the Summit Celebration?
No. Your name will be on a guest list at the entrance to the party.

What is the difference between a donation and pledge?
We encourage hikers to ask family and friends to make a flat donation for your participation in the hike-a-thon and for a worthy cause. This makes it easy for hikers to collect donations immediately and bring them to the Summit Celebration. Collecting donations prior to hiking also makes it easier for our staff to manage the event and tally donations for prizes and awards to be given at the Summit Celebration. Some donors prefer to make a pledge of a specific dollar amount for each mile covered. Hikers may solicit pledges, but will have to collect money after they hike and either drop them off at the Acadia Family Center on Saturday, October 8, from 5-7pm, or bring them to the Summit Celebration in order to be tallied for prizes and awards. To be eligible for the grand prize, hikers MUST have ALL donations and pledges collected and received by the Acadia Family Center.

Where do I keep track of my donations and pledges?
Keep track of your donations on our printable donation sheet found in the “For Hikers” section of the website, or there is also one in the Hike for Mike program that you received at the Ready, Set, Hike! kick-off event. Acadia Family Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Please ask donors to write legibly and give either an email address or mailing address to receive an acknowledgment for tax purposes.

Who should the checks be made out to?
Please make checks payable to Acadia Family Center.

I want to be eligible for the grand prize for the most money raised for Acadia Family Center, but I can't attend the Summit Celebration. Where do I drop off money I raised so I can still be eligible for the prizes?
Hike staffers will be available at Acadia Family Center, 1 Fernald Point Road, Southwest Harbor, on Saturday, October 8 from 5–7pm to collect your donations and pledges, so you are eligible for the grand prize.
